New Pavement and a New Concert Hall
A new, 1300-seated concert hall is to be added to the cultural centre, which will be also extended with another facility for social, sport and cultural events called Erzsébet Műhely (Erzsébet Workshop). The pavement, the street furniture, the green area, Fröccsterasz and Akvárium is to be renewed, and the boulevard is to be widened.
A Coffee House and a Dance Hall Used to Stand Here
Erzsébet tér located in the 5th district is a popular meeting spot for the youth. The original name of the square was Új tér (New Square), then it was renamed Vásártér, Erzsébet tér, Sztálin tér and Engels tér; it got its original name back in 1990. A coffee house used to stand here with a dance hall on its second floor. Then the Nemzeti Szalon (National Saloon) was opened, which operated till the end of World War II. In 1949 the bus station of Volánbusz was built here. The square was renovated in 2006; currently this is the largest green area of the city centre.
